Why APC won’t allow governors to weaken it like PDP – chairman

Prince Adegboyega Famodun, the Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, says the party would not allow state governors to weaken the party from within, just as they did to the main opposition – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Famodun made the remarks while speaking on the rationale behind the recent support of the Forum of APC state chairmen for the National Chairman of the party, Mr Adams Oshiomole against the position of the state governors in Osogbo.
It will be recalled that the Governors’ Forum of the PDP inadvertently became the kingmakers in the party which ruled for 16 years, appointing and removing national chairmen at will.
The APC chairman said the resolve to save Oshiomole’s job was informed by past political experiences and the need to insulate the party against a major crisis.
He explained that similar acrimony within the PDP,  while in power, was responsible for its abysmal performance during the 2015 elections.
He added that the Forum was working assiduously to prevent such occurrence in APC.
“The APC misfortune in Zamfara and the internal crisis in Edo are not enough grounds to relieve Adams Oshiomole of his job.
“Conflicts remain an unavoidable component of every political environment, and the capacity to manage it without resulting to large scale crisis indicates political maturity.
“We, the party chairmen, don’t have any choice than to support Oshiomole.
“We can’t afford to experience the calamity that befell PDP as a result of the similar conflict which they failed to manage diplomatically.
“The essence of history is to guide future happenings.
“In that wise, the Forum of APC state chairmen must do everything possible to save the party by rallying around the National Chairman and take steps to resolve other issues that are causing disagreements,” Famodun said.
He pointed out that the state chairmen are not unaware of certain interests and persons who consider the leadership of Oshiomole as inimical to their political ambitions,  hence, the desperate move to replace him.
He said the forum was making arrangement to ensure amicable resolution without necessarily allowing the governor’s selfish interests jeopardize the overall interest of the party.
Speaking on the performance of APC in the state, the chairman said the administration of Gov. Gboyega Oyetola is consolidating on the achievements of the last administration of Rauf Aregbesola,  especially in the area of infrastructure.
He explained that certain policies of the government are tailored towards addressing the immediate needs of the people,  without compromising physical development.
Responding to the gale of defections that confronted the party, preparatory to the governorship election in 2014, Famodun described the defections by some governorship aspirants as a wrong political calculation.
“For instance, somebody like the former chairman of the party, who was also the immediate Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, who expectedly should understand the tenets of the progressives politics better than me, having been a progressive all his life, unfortunately, made a decision that reduced him politically.
“Within the progressives, you don’t because of personal interest attempt to destroy the party or the system that throws you up, just as you should not attempt to challenge the hegemony of the party.
“That will be tantamount to selfishness and arrogance.
“Disagreements must always be settled amicably, no matter your interest.”
Famodun advised party men to always imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship in any contest rather than attempt to rock the boat each time their targets are not met.
