UBEC Urges States to Emulate Osun Strides in Education

The Universal Basic Education Commission in Nigeria has challenged state governments to emulate the laudable effort of the western State of Osun by accessing the education fund that is currently domiciled with the commission.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr Dikko Suleiman who said the matching grants currently stands at 58 billion naira charged all states government and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to contribute their counterpart funds to their State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB to be able to enjoy the full benefit of the fund.

UBEC boss gave the charge at the flag off ceremony for the distribution of plastic desks and chairs to schools in the State by UBEC at the Local Authority Government Middle School, Osogbo, the state capital.

Sulaiman lauded the quality of the structures and infrastructure the State Government has put in place in Osun, equating it with the ones obtainable in the United States of America.

He also commended the free feeding programme of the State.

“The home grown school feeding programme, the O-Meal in Osun State is one programme that has endeared His Excellency to us because he is the only governor in the country that is doing it religiously despite the capital intensive nature of the programme.”

The Executive Secretary added that: ”The choice of Osun for the flag off was to reward the hard work and dedication of delivery of democracy dividends to the electorates by Governor Aregbesola.”

In an address titled: ‘We are just coming out again’, Governor Aregbesola asserted that the number of and quality of schools built in Osun has not been equalled by any state in Nigeria within the last four years.

”The number of chairs and tables to schools, as little as it is, is the beginning of a revolution in education sector not just in our state but in the entire federation.

“We are building state of the art 100 Elementary Schools, 50 Middle Schools and 20 High Schools in Osun. This is a big project by any standard which has injected life into the construction industry in the state and has provided jobs for different shades of artisans and professionals.”

The Governor described the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as a purposeful government for development and societal renewal adding that Osun is humbled and delighted to be the pioneer and a leading light of the revolution.

The Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board, (Osun SUBEB), Prince Felix Awofisayo, remarked that the event marks the new direction and policy thrust of the federal government on repositioning education sector through direct intervention.
