A medical practitioner, who developed complications while the 2018 FIFA World Cup’s Nigeria/Argentina match was being played in Russia on Tuesday, has been confirmed dead in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
Dr Emeka Ogah, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA), confirmed the death of Dr Canice Ebirim on Wednesday.
Ogah said that reports reaching him suggested that Ebirim died within the period of the match.
He said he received the news of Ebirim’s death at about 9.00 p.m. on that fateful day.
According to him, a friend of the deceased, who brought the sad news to him, said that Ebirim started behaving funny while the match was going on.
“Ebirim’s friend said that the deceased started moving suspiciously and soliciting for assistance which made him (the friend) intervene and took him to the hospital.
“Efforts made to revive him at our hospital proved abortive as he died but we will liaise with his family to conduct an autopsy.
“We are surprised at his death because he consulted at the hospital on Tuesday.
“We have to wait till autopsy is conducted to draw further conclusions on the cause of his death,” the CMD said.
