A commercial motorcyclist (a.k.a okada rider) narrowly escaped death Wednesday afternoon in Ikorodu, when he rammed into an oncoming Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) bus.
Eye witness says the accident was allegedly caused by the reckless riding of the motorcyclist, who failed to obey traffic rules.
The bus was coming from Mile 12, negotiating a left turn into the designated BRT bus terminal when the motorcyclist ran into the bus.
Both the rider and his passanger sustained varying degree of injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
An eye witness, who spoke with The Renaissance, lamented the nonchalant attitude of a police officer near the sceen of the accident, who, rather than assist the accident victims, chose to arrest the rider.
“It is annoying that the policeman at the sceen of the accident, instead of rescuing the accident victims, arrested the motorcyclist and handcuffed him,” the eye witness said.
Another bystander, who spoke in favour of the security operatives, alleged the motorcyclist of riding recklessly.
“This is apparently a case of disregard for traffic rules. The traffic warden should ensure that motorists obey traffic rules while erring ones shold be made to face the consequence in law court,” he said.
The Renaissance reports that several accidents involving BRT buses and commercial motorcyclists on various designated BRT lanes have become rampant in the recent times in Ikorodu.
