A Public Health Physician with the Kwara Ministry of Health, Dr Michael Oguntoye, has warned Nigerians that mobile can transmit virus and germs.
Oguntoye told newsmen in Ilorin on Friday that phones are regarded as “fomites”, as they can transmit diseases and infections.
He described fomites as any non-living object or substance capable of carrying infectious organisms, such as viruses or bacteria.
According to him, phones can transfer diseases and virus from one individual to another.
Oguntoye, who is also an Epidemiologist noted that phones can transmit Ebola, Lassa fever, Cholera and other infectious diseases if it comes in contact with the body fluids of an infected person.
“Phones can serve as the medium that transmits viral organism, causing diseases and infections on people.
“Taking a cell phone into the bathroom and then leaving with it, can carry diseases and germs. Especially when you do not wash your hands and then coming out,” he said.
The Epidemiologist advised people to keep phones away from the toilet and also upkeep personal hygiene, adding that people should inculcate the habit of hand washing at all times.
He also recommended cleaning of phones with a disinfectant that will not harm the phones.
