It was a black Sunday for resident of the quiet Budo Alaka community, a small village in Kishi area of Oke Ogun in Oyo State at the weekend when a man, Monday Daniel, set an entire household on fire, killing five members, mostly children.
The Renaissance gathered that an eight month old baby, Friday Samuel Ode, and four others were burnt beyond recognition in the arson.
Other victims were Ogunma Ogbada, 46, Mummy Ogbada, 10, Daddy Ogbada, 6, and Blessing Samuel Ode, 3.
Two persons – Samuel Daniel Ode, 24 and Mariam Samuel Ode, 21 survived the attack and are receiving treatment at the Muslim Hospital in Kishi town.
Daniel, who is now helping the Police to unravel arson, was alleged to have set the family house on fire at about 2.30 a.m on Sunday when everybody was sleeping.
Eye witness said the suspect had on the previous day approached a member of the family for some money to travel to an undisclosed destination but that the request was turned down.
Apparently angered by the snub, Daniel allegedly came back in the early hours of Sunday and set the the house on fire.
SP Adekunle Ajisebutu, the Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, confirmed the incident, saying the principal suspect, Daniel, 26 escaped from the scene but was later arrested by the police.
Ajibutu said that the suspect, upon interrogation confessed to the crime but claimed he did not know what came over him.
He said the case would soon be transferred to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Iyaganku in Ibadan for further investigation.
