Man jailed for contempt in Osun


A Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun state on Wednesday has sentenced a 27-years-old man, Hammed Ibiyemi, to jail for three months over contempt.

CourtThe prosecuting counsel, Mr Mereti Wilson, said that the convict had May 27, June 10, July 13, Aug. 19, Oct. 14 and Nov. 16, 2016 at about 9.00 a.m. at the magistrate court in Osogbo did absent himself from court proceedings in the case number MOS/521c/2013 Commissioner of Police Vs Hammed Ibiyemi.

The prosecutor said the Wilson deliberately disrespect the court by not attending the hearing whenever his case was called.

He said the convict committed the offence contrary to and punishable under Section 133(2) of Criminal Code Cap 24 vol. ll laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2003.

The convict pleaded guilty to the charge.

The counsel to the convict, Mr R.A Ngu, urged the court to temper justice with mercy and that the court should give his client an alternative of fine because he was a first time offender and he remorseful of his deed.

In his ruling, the Magistrate Mrs Halimat Bashiru, revoked the bail application of the convict and ordered that he should be remanded in prison for three month or paid N10,000 fine for contempt.

The case was adjourned to Jan. 27 for hearing.
