Kidnappers abduct ex-commissioner’s mother in Ondo

Gunmen, on Sunday night abducted an 87-year-old woman, Mrs Olapeju Fasonu, from her residence at Araromi Obu in Odigbo Local Government of Ondo State.

The octogenarian was the mother of Chief Bunmi Fasonu, a former Commissioner for Agriculture during the administration of late Governor Adebayo Adefarati of Ondo state.

The incident occurred at about 9 p.m. at No. 35 Ajewole St., Araromi-Obu, in the presence of two relatives.

A member of the family, Mr Tayo Ikujuni, said that the gunmen, numbering about three, scaled the fence of the house and over-powered the occupants.

According to him, the octogenarian, who is ill with malaria, was taken away by her abductors in a waiting car.

He wondered why anybody would want to disturb the peace of the elderly woman when she was not involved in politics or in any feud with anybody.

Ikujuni said the whereabouts of the woman had yet to be ascertained, adding that the incident had been reported to the Police.

“The armed gunmen scaled the fence of the house at about 9 p.m. on Sunday and over-powered the occupants before taking the woman away.
“We have yet to ascertain her whereabouts; we pray that she is safe and in good health.

“We have reported the case to the Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Security (DSS) in Akure,’’ he said.

Mr Isaac Eke, the state Commissioner of Police, who confirmed the incident, said that the police were on the trail of the perpetrators of the kidnap.
