The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has shifted the 2019 general election over logistics constraints.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, announced the postponement at about 2.45 a.m. on Saturday in Abuja.

The shift in the election date came after Yakubu held an emergency meeting with security officials, election observers and other stakeholders.

He said proceeding with the election as scheduled was no longer feasible and as result of this, the election was postponed by a week.

By the postponement, the presidential and national assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, Feb. 23 while the governorship and states house of assembly elections come up on March 9.
