Elumelu urges Nigerian students to embrace entrepreneurship

The Chairman Board of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Dr Tony Elumelu has admonished Nigerian students to embrace entrepreneurship in order to overcome the problem of unemployment.

Elumelu gave the charge while addressed students at the National Dialogue Series, organised by the Students’ Union, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, in collaboration with the management of the institution in Sokoto.

The Chairman of Tony Elumelu Foundation, who is a successful entrepreneur, expressed happiness with the opportunity for him to speak directly to the youths.

He said: “This is the kind of initiative that brings today’s leaders and the people, to whom the future truly belongs, to interact and share perspectives.

“The Tony Elumelu Foundation is committed to empowering young African men and women as my contribution towards the development of our continent.

 “This is borne out of my belief that entrepreneurship is the single most critical ingredient for economic empowerment and jobs creation.’’

He also commended the efforts of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, and the University’s management for instituting the National Dialogue Series.

Elumelu lauded the efforts of an alumnus of the University, Dr Shadi Sabeh and the Foundation for their efforts in nurturing the dialogue series to become reality.

He described Shadi as “a fine example of the great force and impact our young ones can achieve if we support and empower them.’’

Elumelu also advised the students to be proud of the University, which had produced many great men like Shadi, and Gov. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State, whom he described as, “a digital governor’’.

The Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Muhammad Zangaria, acknowledged the great impact Elumelu in making African continent to develop and match up with its contemporaries around the globe.

The Vice-chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, lauded the UBA chairman for the intellectual nurturing the students of the institution.

Zuru described Elumelu as “an icon of great recognition in the continent and the world at large.’’

He requested the former House of Representative member to partner with the University by establishing the Tony Elumelu Business School in the institution.

The VC explained that if the school is established, it would train budding entrepreneurs in the country, tame poverty, unemployment and youth restiveness in the society.

The Students Union President, Comrade Idris Mubarak Maibasira, commended the University’s management for providing the conducive environment that has made the concept a reality.

“The unparalleled philanthropic movement of Elumelu had taken numerous Nigerians out of poverty and had equipped scores with entrepreneurial skills.

He enjoined the state government and the foundation to assist the student union in addressing accommodation challenging facing Nigerian students.

Maibasira also requested the UBA Chairman to construct a pedestrian bridge at the “Kofar Mata’’ route, under the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility.
