Danjuma becomes Redeemer’s University Chancellor

Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has installed former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma, as the 2nd Chancellor of the Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun, South-West Nigeria.

Danjuma, an elder statesman, is a stalwalt of the leading opposition party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He is also a politician, businessman and philanthropist.

Speaking at the 8th convocation of the university, Osinbajo tasked Nigerians to be patient with the government, saying the country will soon come out of recession.

He said the present recession was occasioned by loss of about sixty percent of the national income to fall in oil price and vandals.

The Vice President described the Redeemer’s University as a purposeful university and called on the graduands to be good ambassadors of the institution.

Osinbajo advised them to take advantage of Internet technology and embrace multi-tasking with versatility.

“This is the age of multi-tasking. Multi-skill and multi-tasking is the order of the day. For instance, the whole concept of Aso Villa Demo Day was designed by two students of this University whose course of studies have nothing to do with IT. In your generation, you have opportunity to multi-task and have the facilities to do so.

“The age of mono-skill graduates is gone. Be a versatile operator, be technology savvy and understand its relevance to your profession. Follow stock market and prices of shares. Understand money, know how it works. Everyone has got a right to be rich, not just for the privileged few.”

Osinbajo cited an example of another graduate of the Redeemer’s University, who works with him, urging them to take a cue from her skills.

“She studied Business Administration, yet she is an IT expert. She can write proposal that sells and knows how to implement it. So, you can study Microbiology and be the next innovator in entertainment industry. Animation is a new growth area that is attracting task and skills from different levels,” he charged.

The Vice President however advised the graduands on integrity.

“Talent is nothing if you are not diligent. Lack of integrity will come back to hunt you. Promotion is all about recommendations and you won’t get one if you mismanage your office or the resources,” he said.

Danjuma pledges

Pledging support for the university, the newly installed Chancellor of the university, General Danjuma promised to lift the school to a higher pedestal.

He called on all and sundry to join him to make the missionary university an outstanding citadel of learning, pledging that no stone would be spared in making the university a world class one.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Z Debo Adeyewa lamented low financial involvement in private University education in Nigeria and urged the Government to support the initiative.

“With the contribution of private universities to the growth and well-being of our dear country, I call on government to support private universities.

“There is a need to provide Incentives. Single digit interest loans and access to funds would aid the acceleration of research and development,” he said.

Out of the 619 graduands, 25 bagged First Class honours representing 4 per cent of the graduating
students while 207 made Second Class Upper Division representing 33.4 per cent.

290 graduating students came out with Second Class Lower Division (46.8 per cent), 97 students that represents (15.7 per cent) made Third Class while 84 students that represents 13.6 per cent made
Pass degrees.

The institution also graduate two Ph. D students, 23, Masters Degrees, and seven Post Graduate Diploma.
