A pregnant woman and five others died when a church building, under construction, collapsed at Uja-Ugbo, Arogbo-Ijaw in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses say four others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the incident that occurred in the coastal community of the state.
The victims included the pregnant woman, Dali Gunuboh, Mayama Goloba, Kowei Aboa, Morenike Bubuma and Margret Goloba.
The Renaissance gathered that the victims were said to have gone to the construction site to pick some unused planks for cooking when the building came down on them.
A resident, who pleaded anonymity, explained that the workers had vacated the site after raising the building to accommodate more worshiper.
The source said the incident was the first in the community and attributed the accident to the use of interior materials by the workers.
He said the incident had been reported to the traditional ruler of Arogbo Ijaw, the Regent of Arogbo, Amos Sofiyea, who rushed to the scene of the incident.
The monarch was said to have visited the victims’ families to commiserate with them.
Also, the Information Officer for the local government, Monday Konwei, confirmed the incident.
“The victims were on the church premises to gather planks, which were used in the construction before part of the dilapidated old structure fell on them and killed six of them,” Konwei said.
The Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the local government, Bekewe Olowu, also confirmed the incident, describing it as shocking and devastating.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Femi Joseph, explained that the people were killed while struggling for the used wood at the site of the building.
