The international community must prevail on the United States and Israel to end the decades of atrocities against Palestinians, such as last week’s massacre of 60 protesters by Israeli snipers, according to a prominent Nigerian civil rights body.
Engineer AbdulWaheed Atoyebi, Director of the Muslim Awareness International (MAI) made the call during a world press conference on President Donald Trump’s relocation of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed Jerusalem in Palestine.
Engr. Atoyebi said, “After 70 years since the Palestinian people were evicted from their houses and turned into refugees, another 60 innocent young men and women were killed by Israeli snipers and over 2000 were injured.
“The Israeli government as usual continues to be defiant, using deception, lies and false narratives to defend their indefensible crimes against humanity.”
The body, which has always been at the forefront of the Palestinian struggle in Nigeria, said the relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem was provocative and exposed Washington as a biased party that could no longer serve the cause of justice or fairness on the Palestinian issue.
“It is important to reiterate the fact that according to international law, the West Bank, Jerusalem, Gaza and other parts of Palestine are occupied territories while the occupation remains,”he said.
“The United States, an ally of Israel, continues to give excuses while deflecting blame for the crimes and atrocities being committed. It is now clearer than ever with the movement of the US Embassy to Jerusalem that the United States was never an impartial broker in the peace process. Indeed, if we forget or remain inept, history will not forget the roles played by all in this crisis.”
MAI praised the historic role of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whom it said has shown unequaled solidarity with the Palestinians, as well as South Africa and Nigeria which have registered their protests at the maltreatment of the Palestinians.
“The whole world is taking note of the great roles Turkey is playing. We call on the Arab League to wake up from their slumber and follow the steps of countries who are standing up to be counted. Arab nations should stop burying their heads in the sand while Palestine and Islam’s third holiest site are under constant attacks,” the body added.
The body also called on the UN to go beyond the symbolic criticism of Israeli ‘genocide’ against the Palestinians and impose appropriate sanctions to force Israel and its allies to retrace their steps.
