Arewa youths warn Muslim community to stay clear of politics

By our correspondent
The Arewa Youth Forum(AYF), Friday warned the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) to stay clear of politics.
Malam Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu, the President of the Forum, gave the warning in Abuja, urging the council to avoid commenting on politics related issues.
Gujungu, was reacting to the petition of the NSCIA on the appointment of a new chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
He noted that it was wrong for the NSCIA to concern itself with the list of candidates submitted to the Senate Committee for screening by President Goodluck Jonathan.
“Appointments in federal parastatals are exclusive rights of Mr President.
“The petition of NSCIA to the Senate criticising the list of NAHCON members submitted to it by the presidency is uncalled for.
“Why should NSCIA meddle in appointments that are purely political?
“The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs is the highest religious body for the entire Muslim Ummah in the country, and we all hold its leadership in high esteem.
“But to say that President Jonathan rushed the reconstitution of NAHCON without due process is not correct.
“What did they expect the pesident to do, other than submit a list of candidates to the Senate to be screened?
The secretary General of NSCIA, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, should as a matter of fact, steer clear of affairs of government before he drags the name of the Council to the mud,” Gujungu added.
