Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State on Wednesday declared his intention to run for the senatorial seat for the Ogun Central Senatorial District.
Amosun, who will complete his two terms as governor of the Gateway State on May 29, 2019, announced his senatorial ambition at the State Executive Council meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), held at MITROS suites, Ibara, Abeokuta.
During the declaration, the governor opted for a consensus governorship candidate for the 2019 election and advised the party members to accept the consensus result in good faith without which the next option would be direct primary.
The incumbent, Sen. Lanre Tejuoso, had on Monday declared his intention to re-contest the seat.
But Amosun believes that his performance as the state’s governor in the past seven years would earn him a victory to secure the Senate seat in the 2019 poll.
The Renaissance reports that Amosun was first elected senator for the Ogun Central district of Ogun State, Nigeria in April 2003.
In April 2007, he made an unsuccessful bid to be elected governor of Ogun State but won the governorship election held in April 2011.
