Former Vice Chancellor of the Al-Hikmah University, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem has emerged as the 10th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin.
Dr Abdullahi Oyekan, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council of a leading university in Nigeria announced the appointment on Monday at a press briefing.
Oyekan said the management of one of the most sought-after universities in Africa reached the decision after a meeting of the Council in accordance with the provisions of the Universities Amendment Act.
“The appointment will take effect from Oct. 16 while the tenure of the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali ends on Oct. 15,” he said.
The Pro-Chancellor recalled that interested applicants were earlier given six weeks to submit applications, which deadline expired on May 26.
Abdulkareem of the Department of Chemical Engineering was born in 1954 at Oro, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara.
Renaissance recalled that no fewer than 30 professors at the University of Ilorin, had signified applied for the office of the Vice Chancellor of the institution.
Some of the aspirants included the current Deputy Vice Chancellor, Management Services, Professor Adedayo Abdulkareem; former Dean, Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, Professor Hassan Saliu; Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professor Ahmad Abdulsalam; Professor Adebayo Lawal of Faculty of Arts; and former Vice Chancellor, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, presently, Director of Laboratory to Product Centre of the university; Professor Sulyam Abdulkareem among others.
Reports indicated that the management had favoured the emergence of the new VC from outside Ilorin Emirate, since Professor Ambali is from Ilorin.
