A gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun state, Dr Peter Babalola, has said that the seven and half years of Gov. Rauf Aregbesola led administration was better than the past governments of the opposition since the creation of the state.
Babalola made the remarks in his hometown, Ikire during the inter-religious prayer he organised to kick-start his gubernatorial campaign.
He maintained that Aregbesola has raised the bar of unprecedented development in Osun.
He, however, explained that the denominational prayer became necessary because of his intention to succeed Aregbesola so as to consolidate his good legacies.
Babalola, who is the Chairman Local Government Service Commission, stressed that Osun West Senatorial District must produce the next Governor and the person must be Christian.
Recalling the reason why he left Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Babalola said the party was unfair to him when they denied him the governorship ticket because he is a Christian.
According to him,“in 2007, I bought 69 vehicles and branded it to campaign for Olagunsoye Oyinlola but I was paid with evil.
“When it was my turn to become Governor, they said I am a Christian and they denied me the ticket.
“As God will have it, Aregbesola came and won.
“Since 19 years of the creation of Osun state, the seven and half years of Aregbesola is better than the past administrations in the state.
“Who has the experience like me among the aspirants? I worked with the military, I worked with the civilian.
“I worked with unsuccessful government, I worked with the successful government, I was a commissioner and I was a Chief of Staff.
“Babalola who spoke with newsmen after the prayer, said “it is only when there is the peace that I can aspire to be governor.
“When you talk of the most experienced politician, I am,” the aspirant said.
He expressed optimism that there would be level playing ground in the APC, boasting that “Osun West would produce Governor and I will be the person.
The prayer was attended by the Chief Imam of Osun State, Sheik Musa Animasaun, and imams from all local government areas in the state as well as the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) led by the Vice Chairman in the state, Rev. John Adeniyi.
Traditional rulers in all the local councils also attended the prayer with political associates and friends of Babalola.
In his sermon, Chief Imam of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Dr Adekunle Abdulhameed, urged the state chapter of APC to be fair to all aspirants seeking its governorship ticket to avoid needless controversies.
He added that if zoning was part of APC arrangement, then it should be respected by its leaders.
He added that people would not follow any political party that refused to be just, fair and fail to keep to its rules.
Also, the Deputy Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Revd. Adeniyi advised political parties to eschew violence during the electioneering.
Both religious faiths then prayed for the success of Babalola and peace and prosperity in the country.
