Gov. Abdulfattah Ahmed of Kwara State’s on Tuesday reterated his administration’s desire to continue to discover sports talents and develop them to bring honours to the state.
He gave the assurance while reacting to the Man-of-the-Competition award won by Flying Eagles star, forward Taiwo Awoniyi, at the Glo Premier League Super 4 Invitational Tournament in Abuja.
Awoniyi had emerged the star of the six-team tournament his team won in style with 13 points from five matches.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Abdulwahab Oba, Ahmed said Awoniyi was discovered from the state government’s talent hunt programme for the youths.
The governor then promised to give him the needed support to enable him reach the zenith of his chosen career.
”We are monitoring Awoniyi. We are in constant touch with him, because he will be a light bearer of the state’s footballers in no distant future.
”We will do everything within our powers to make him succeed and thus set him on a pedestal which would make other youths in the state emulate his industry and good character,’’ he said in the statement.
Ahmed further said that the state’s sports complex in Ilorin, recently renovated by the government, has the capacity to host 16 different events simultaneously.
He said government would organise more youth completions and resuscitate the schools and Local Government Areas (LGAs) sports competitions under the government and private collaboration.
The governor urged other youths in the state not to be used as political thugs as the general elections draw nearer.
“God did not create anyone without his ability to contribute his quota to the development of his town, LGA, state, country and the world,’’ he said.
